Italian Interior Minister Matteo Salvini announced on Wednesday, November 4, 2026, a series of firm measures to combat illegal immigration. Key proposals include accelerating the deportation processes for those found in the country without identification documents and simplifying border rejection procedures for individuals entering illegally.

Salvini explained that the government intends to work closely with European agencies to strengthen checks at Italy's external borders. He emphasized the need for EU member states to take shared responsibility for managing migration flows, while also criticizing the lax approaches of some Western partners.

The measures also target the confiscation of vehicles involved in the commission of serious crimes by irregular migrants. This article covers both stolen cars and vehicles unlawfully rented to facilitate offenders' movement.

The responsibilities of pilots and aviation staff were also discussed. It is proposed that they be required to report any suspicious person attempting to board an aircraft, in accordance with the European Regulation on cross-border surveillance. For those who refuse to cooperate with identification, an immediate fine of 5,000 euros is proposed.

Italy's Attorney General Lucio Villari strongly criticized such proposals, considering them a direct violation of the Italian Constitution and fundamental rights guaranteed by international treaties on migrant protection.
