The court in Palma de Mallorca sentenced Romanian citizen George Virgiliu Teianu to 25 years and three months in prison for the murder of his ex-partner, Rosario Jiménez Díaz, known as “Chari”. The sentence, pronounced recently, follows the court’s examination of the details of a brutal crime committed on 10 December 2024, in which Teianu stabbed the victim 66 times inside a car, in the presence of their two-year-old daughter. The man is also obliged to pay total compensation of 490,500 euros to the victim’s family. [1]

The incident occurred against the background of a relationship that had lasted 10 years, and at the time of the act there was a restraining order against Teianu. According to the investigation, the couple went to pick up their daughter from a nursery in s'Arenal and got into a Peugeot 107 belonging to the woman. The man took the wheel, the victim sat in the right-hand passenger seat, and the child was in the back seat. While driving along the streets of Anfós, Calamar and Congre, Teianu pulled out a knife with a 15-centimetre blade and repeatedly attacked the woman, striking her head, neck, torso, abdomen and arms. [1]

Teianu continued to drive until he rear-ended another car near number 33 on Camí de Can Pastilla. As a result of the collision, the 21-month-old girl suffered some bruises. The man then went to a nearby park, where he surrendered to the police and confessed that he had killed his partner. [1]

The judges in Palma stated in the reasoning for the sentence that the attack was “sudden and unexpected”, and the victim’s position in the right-hand seat, in a very confined space, drastically limited her ability to defend herself or avoid the blows. The court took this aggravating circumstance into account, as well as the fact that the act was committed in the presence of the minor daughter, who witnessed the assault and was subsequently slightly injured in the crash caused by her father. [1]

For the individualization of the punishment, the court considered one mitigating circumstance: Teianu’s confession before the Local Police. The President of the court explained that although the police were looking for the driver who had left the scene of a car accident, there was no certainty that Teianu knew he was being pursued for murder at the time he confessed. Thus, his cooperation was considered a factor that contributed to a partial reduction of the sentence, which remains severe nonetheless. [1]
