Local authorities in Luduș have decided to suspend the public library's activities, following the resignation of the last remaining librarian, which was caused by severe staff reductions. Mayor Ioan Cristian Moldovan noted that the staff cuts took place a year and a half ago, motivated by implemented projects and difficulty in co-financing, which led to significant borrowing. The number of employees was reduced to just one person working a single shift. Suspicion arose because the city no longer has even a single bookstore, and the Cultural House has been closed for approximately three years. The mayor dismissed rumors that young people no longer have access to reading, noting that all three schools in Luduș continue their activities and maintain their libraries. A new librarian will be hired within at most a month and a half. Hiring procedures are underway. In the meantime, modernization is planned, and once the position is filled, operations will resume. Procedures were launched urgently. [1]

The National Bank of Romania (BNR) announced on Tuesday the replenishment of its gold reserves with nearly 2 tonnes, reaching a level of approximately 104.4 tonnes, valued at over 7 billion dollars, against the backdrop of recent increases in the international price of the precious metal. [2]

Luduș Library Temporarily Closed After Librarian's Resignation; Mayor Promises Quick Replacement

The Luduș Town Hall suspended the public library's activities after the sole remaining librarian, following drastic staff cuts, submitted her resignation. [3]

According to Mayor Ioan Cristian Moldovan, the staff reduction was necessary “to cover expenses,” after the execution of numerous projects led to “major loans.” The number of positions decreased by 39, of which 34 were occupied, leaving the institution with just one employee. [3]

The remaining librarian resigned a month ago, citing “personal reasons.” The position was put up for competition under urgent procedures, and the mayor estimates that the suspension of activities will not exceed a month and a half. This situation has aroused concern, being compared to the fate of the Cultural House, closed for three years, and aggravated by the absence of any bookstore in the city. The mayor dismissed rumors that young people no longer have access to reading, noting that the three schools in Luduș maintain their libraries. [3]

The suspension of activities will be used for the modernization and equipping of the library. Monica Avram, director of the Mureș County Library, confirmed the inclusion of the space in a multifunctional PNRR project, which includes laptops and tablets. Thus, until the hiring of the new librarian and the completion of works, the tens of thousands of volumes will remain accessible only under supervision, and the town hall has committed to maintaining the investment for at least five years. The investment will transform the current space into a modern, digitally connected one, improving resources available to the local community. Urgent hiring is a measure adopted to quickly restore public cultural services. The library’s modernization and equipping are part of a national initiative for cultural development. Protecting the volumes during the suspension of activities ensures the conservation of the locality’s publishing heritage. [3]
