The well-known journalist and presenter Nicolas Demorand has revealed in his personal book, 'Intérieur nuit' (published by Les Arènes), his diagnosis of bipolarity, a mental health disorder that has lasting consequences for his career and private life. When asked how his illness has affected his relationship with his two teenage children and their mother, Louise Tourret, Demorand explained the direct impact of the different stages of the illness on family dynamics.
In an extensive interview granted to Society magazine, which went on sale on November 5, 2026, 55-year-old Nicolas Demorand described the current situation. 'Today, they live at their mother’s house, just next to Sainte-Anne Hospital. When I got permission—as they put it—I went to see them. They made coffee for me, we talked for an hour and a half... That’s about how things stand,' the journalist admitted. The presenter acknowledges that the way people around his children view him has changed since he publicly disclosed his bipolar disorder. 'Before, at the schoolyard, their friends would say: 'Wow, your dad works on the radio, that's amazing.' After the book came out, it was: 'How is your dad doing? Is he happy or unhappy?' That makes me laugh,' he continued.
Demorand also detailed his relationship with his wife/partner, Louise Tourret, a producer at Radio France. He highlights her discreet care: 'When she sees me lying on the sofa all day and realizes things aren't going well, she is very present but in a gentle way. She knows I’d rather be alone than put on this show, because I’m simply ashamed to be in this state. So she waits for things to resolve. As do I.' He also notes that Louise knows bipolarity very well due to prior experiences, but she doesn't take on the role of a psychiatric nurse; instead, she finds balance by giving him space when she feels his condition is worsening.
