Parallel to DNSC activities, an international Google investigation has identified another cyberattack vector targeting subscribers to streaming services. A Chinese manufacturer is accused of intentionally integrating malicious software into TV Box devices, which convert regular TVs into smart TVs. This software, activated on first boot, allows criminals to remotely control the devices, collect personal information, and access the local network, exposing data from other devices in the home, such as surveillance cameras. [1]
Experts estimate that affected devices are present in over 200 countries, including potentially the Romanian market. The solutions recommended by Netflix for phishing frauds—manually verifying the official address and refusing unsolicited link clicks—are ineffective against this hardware threat, which takes control of the device at the system level. Users are advised to be cautious about the source of TV Box devices and to periodically check the security settings of their home network. [1]
