Fabien Galthié appears frustrated at the start of November as the French national rugby team prepares for three matches in the Nations Championship against Fiji, South Africa, and Argentina. The head coach is facing a wave of injuries, with approximately twenty players potentially unavailable, including key figures such as Matthieu Jalibert, Thomas Ramos, Julien Marchand, Thibaud Flament, and Emmanuel Meafou. In late October, Galthié expressed his concerns during a press conference, stating, 'This is an issue in French rugby. It is not new; it has been a problem since I took charge of the selection.' [1]
A month prior, on the Canal Rugby Club show, Galthié went further, warning that the expiration date for international players is dangerously decreasing. He stated, 'We have noticed that after 27 or 28 years old, aging accelerates in our ecosystem.' Although players dispute fewer matches than twenty years ago due to agreements between the French Rugby Federation (FFR) and the League, as well as new World Rugby guidelines, the physical workload during a season is unprecedented. Effective playing time has exploded from twenty-five minutes in 1995 to over thirty-four minutes during the 2023 World Cup, often exceeding forty minutes in recent years, such as during France’s victory over Japan in 2024. [1]
The intensity of the game has also changed significantly, with the number of runs and contacts reaching record highs. Additionally, recommendations for five weeks of rest during the off-season and twelve weeks without contact in a year are not always followed. This physical wear is compounded by mental fatigue, which prevents the body from recovering properly. Concerns are mounting for star players such as Antoine Dupont (29), Romain Ntamack (27), Damian Penaud (30), Anthony Jelonch (30), and Greg Alldritt (29), raising questions about whether the core of the French team is too old for upcoming battles, particularly next year's World Cup in Australia. [1]
Former French captain Fabien Pelous, who accumulated one hundred and eighteen caps between 1995 and 2007, offers a contrasting view. 'I think the peak of this generation is really now,' he says. Citing statistics from past world champions, such as South Africa in 2023, which had an average age of 30.4, Pelous believes the team will be more mature next year. However, he notes that South African rugby is entirely focused on the national team, with players competing for only six months of the year, whereas the French domestic championship is very dense and lucrative, making it impossible to focus solely on the national side. [1]
Pelous highlights that the French system is a victim of its own success and faces consequences from an evolution seen in other sports: players are starting their careers earlier. Among the fifteen starters against Fiji, seven began their professional careers at age eighteen, and Antoine Dupont started even earlier at seventeen. The average debut age for this team is 18.4, compared to 19.9 for the squad that played the 2007 World Cup quarter-final. This early start means the 'machine begins to wear out' during years when it might not even be fully developed. [1]
Sébastien Ratel, a professor at the University of Clermont Auvergne and a researcher in sports science, emphasizes the importance of managing the growth spurt of young athletes. He warns that if the workload around the peak growth period, which typically occurs around age fourteen, is poorly managed, it can lead to overuse injuries and fragility. Ratel suggests that instead of 'accelerated aging,' we might be seeing 'accelerated training of young people,' potentially shifting the prime years from 20 to 32 to 18 to 28. Despite the challenges, Pelous considers this generation the best in French history, noting that they have achieved historic results despite the physical toll. [1]
