Actor Nicolas Cage revealed that he is temporarily 'homeless' following a massive ground collapse that occurred near his Malibu villa, forcing him to stay in hotels. This unusual situation was presented to the audience at the Los Angeles Comic Con, where the 62-year-old actor also spoke about his plans for Halloween alongside his daughter, August. [1] [2]
I'm currently a bit homeless. Something happened with my Malibu house, so I am living in hotels, [1] [2]
Cage's housing issues began after a massive ground collapse formed near the access road to his beachfront property. The collapse affected both the driveway and extended into the adjacent roadway, raising concerns about the safety and accessibility of the area. According to reports, the massive crater was measured by KTLA at approximately 30 by 30 feet, with an estimated depth of 25 feet according to the Los Angeles Times. [1] [2]
The ground instability occurred on September 8, 2026, and has been attributed to severe coastal conditions, coastal erosion, torrential rains, strong waves caused by the offshore storm Marie, and unsustainable sea levels. Images from the scene showed broken asphalt, concrete, and other debris inside the huge crater. It was not just Cage's property that was affected, but also essential infrastructure in the neighborhood: a gas leak was reported, forcing authorities to shut off gas supply to the area. An evacuation order was issued for 31 properties because emergency services could no longer access the area adequately. [1] [2]
Cage purchased the four-story property located on Sea Level Drive in 2024 for approximately $10.5 million. The house offers stunning ocean views and luxury features. According to the Page Six website, the actor urgently requested three official permits from the city to address the damage. He obtained an emergency construction permit to stack sandbags in front of the property and the beach, to protect the building from waves and prevent erosion. Other permits were approved for the removal of asphalt debris, preparation for the installation of support systems, and excavation of soil samples. [1] [2]
An official statement from the City of Malibu, posted on social media, noted that the Emergency Services Director declared a local state of emergency, in consultation with the Department of Fire and the Los Angeles County Sheriff. A Coastal Flood Advisory was issued until 11:00 PM on September 8, 2026. Authorities recommended relocating refugees to a temporary shelter established by the American Red Cross at Malibu High School. [2]
