The third season of the popular Dutch quiz show De Slimste Mens (The Smartest Person) has concluded with politics reporter Mats Akkerman emerging as the winner. The finale, broadcast on NPO 1, saw Akkerman compete against NOS journalist Jeroen Gortworst, with comedian Claudia de Breij also reaching the final stage. Despite the intense competition and the emotional backdrop of the show's recent events, the financial outcome for the participants was predetermined by the program's standard payment structure. Mats Akkerman’s victory comes after participating in nine episodes throughout the season. According to the show's rules, which former contestant Rob Goossens clarified, each participant receives a fixed fee of €250 per episode. There is no additional cash prize awarded for winning the series, distinguishing De Slimste Mens from other reality competitions like Expeditie Robinson where winners often receive significant bonus payouts. Consequently, Akkerman’s total earnings amount to €2,250, making him the highest earner among the final three contestants regardless of the result. [1] [3]

Akkerman’s path to the final included seven regular episodes, followed by a semifinal appearance, and culminating in the final. His fellow finalist, Claudia de Breij, who was named the best player of the season earlier in the broadcast, participated in eight episodes, earning €2,000. Jeroen Gortworst also appeared in eight episodes, receiving the same €2,000. While Akkerman takes home the title and the trophy, his financial gain is merely €250 more than his competitors. [2] [3]

The season finale was marked by a solemn tribute to Paulien Cornelisse, the longtime jury member who passed away on September 30 at the age of 50. Host Herman van der Zandt honored her during the broadcast, expressing his deep affection and missing her presence. The decision to continue airing episodes was made in consultation with her family. Akkerman shared personal memories of Cornelisse, describing her as dry, friendly, and sharp. He revealed that he often laughed with her both on and off set, noting that she was looking forward to enjoying her time on the show after recovering from chemotherapy. [1] [2]

Reflecting on his experience, Akkerman spoke to ANP about the unusual circumstances of his victory, noting the emotional weight of participating in the show after Cornelisse’s death. He also shared a humorous anecdote from the early recording days, admitting that he drank alcohol due to nerves before the first sessions, believing it would keep him awake, only to find that his performance improved significantly when he was sober for subsequent recordings.
