Season 17 of The Great British Bake Off, hosted by Noel Fielding and Alison Hammond and judged by Paul Hollywood and Nigella Lawson, continues at Welford Park. Throughout the series, numerous contestants have said goodbye to the tent, in a process marked by emotion and gratitude. [4] [3]
Danni was the first contestant eliminated after failing to impress the judges during the biscuits week. Danni stated: 'My man, I’m very happy to be the first one out because I know everyone else there has more skill than me. But I’ve learned something about myself, namely that, under the right circumstances, I can make quite a few friends. Finding love in a group of strangers — that’s beautiful.' Adding: 'What I’ve taken away is a wonderful new family that I would do anything for. Some of the best advice I’ve ever received on how to improve what I love, and absolutely amazing memories with fun in the scorching tent.' [3] [1]
In week 3, Alison Hammond announced Shannon's departure. She said, 'It’s so hard to put into words what this means to me. I’ve made myself up, largely, and let go of any persona of the person I wanted to be. I was truly myself, and it’s been a life-changing experience. That is the word that defines me, and I don’t want to say goodbye to anyone!' [3] [1]
In week 4, Molly became the third person to leave the series. Noel conveyed the news to her, and Molly responded: 'I knew. I’m sorry to leave the tent, but I think it’s my time and it’s the right decision. It would have been hard for me to stay longer than you all. You have more to prove. I really wanted to do the biscuits week and the bread week and I baked alongside my husband in the tent. It was a wonderful experience and I’m very proud of myself.' [3] [1]
In the same week 4, Nikki left the competition for personal reasons. She stated: 'I couldn’t complete two of the three challenges, but at that moment I didn’t want to and didn’t need to be anywhere else. Being by my mother’s side during her final days was the most important thing in the world and I wouldn’t trade that decision for anything. Although it was a difficult period, I am grateful for the memories created and for the opportunity to be part of such a special experience.' [3] [1]
In week 5, Yannis became the fifth contestant eliminated. Noel Fielding announced Connie as Star Baker, and Alison informed Yannis that he must leave. Yannis stated: 'Thank you, it’s been a pleasure. I grew up watching this show, and being here for five weeks is surreal. I’ll be very proud of this, and it was absolutely wonderful.' He continued saying: 'I’ve been torn between sadness and relief... Filming for very long hours, juxtaposing my 12-hour night shift and daily work was exhausting, so my body was ready for a break! People surrounded me with hugs and lots of love, then I flew off to Spain for my best friend’s wedding next week, which was probably the perfect way to cushion the blow!' [4] [1]
Later, in week 6, Tom was named Star Baker, and Alison told Clara that she would leave the tent. Clara stated: 'I had a fantastic time, I love you people! This experience isn’t just about learning to bake, but also about learning something important about yourself. I didn’t think I could do this with my disorder, and I’m very proud that I did it and hope to be an inspiration for others.' [3] [1]
The latest update occurred in week 7, Free From Party Week (gluten-free, dairy-free, or vegan week). Gabe was declared Star Baker, while Alison informed Gary that he was leaving the competition. Gary said, 'It’s fine, don’t worry, no problems. I’m very proud, yes, I just didn’t expect to get this far. My main goal was to reach week 3, and now it’s my turn to go.' [3] [1]
