As the first Sunday of Advent approaches, the tradition of enjoying coffee with a piece of Christstollen becomes a staple in many households. While homemade versions are traditional, many consumers prefer the convenience of ready-made options from supermarkets or discounters. Stiftung Warentest recently conducted a comprehensive test of 18 Christstollen products available on the market to determine which ones live up to their festive packaging. [1]

Among the tested products was Aldi's 'Wintertraum Butter-Almond Stollen'. At the time of testing, the 750-gram loaf cost an average of 4 euros, translating to approximately 5.35 euros per kilogram. The test evaluated the stollen based on several criteria, with sensory assessment—including appearance, smell, taste, texture, and aftertaste—accounting for 55 percent of the overall grade. Additional factors included laboratory tests for harmful substances, packaging usability, and labeling accuracy. [1]

The Aldi stollen received an overall grade of 2.6, categorized as 'satisfactory' (befriedigend), placing it in the middle of the ranking. The sensory evaluation was the most significant factor in this result. According to the testers, a high-quality stollen should have an aromatic, balanced flavor where raisins, candied orange peel, and candied lemon peel are pleasantly noticeable. The texture should be loose and crumbly inside. However, the Aldi stollen did not fully convince the testers, particularly due to a taste described as rather bread-like. [1]

Despite the mediocre taste score, the laboratory analysis provided reassuring results regarding safety. The investigation found that only very low to low levels of harmful substances were present across the tested stollens, indicating no significant health risks. While the Aldi stollen did not reach the top tier for flavor, it avoided critical failures and offered a convenient, safe option for consumers looking to avoid baking during the busy pre-Christmas period.
